Intumescent flame retardants can generate a uniform carbonaceous foam layer when heated. They have good functions of heat insulation, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression, and have now been widely used in coatings and plastics. This article introduces two types of intumescent flame retardants that can be used in flame-retardant plastics. When these flame retardants are applied to polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), the oxygen index of the materials can reach around 30, the flame retardancy can reach the UL94V-0 level, the smoke generation amount is the same as that of the non-flame-retardant materials, and the density is only 10-15% higher than that of the non-flame-retardant materials. The article lists the formulations and properties of various flame-retardant polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyurethane (PU).
